“Mia?”
Paige was staring at me with absolute venom and I was sure she was about to spit acid in my face, Jurassic Park style. Buck was the one saying my name though. I looked up at him.
“Can I take you somewhere quiet?” he asked, still keeping me folded in his arms. “Or do you wanna stay around… people?”
His concern that I might not want to be shuffled off again, after what had just happened, was sweet. Still, I wanted to get out of Paige’s orbit, especially when her lips quirked up in a snide smile that promised me nothing but trouble. Why she hated me was a mystery, maybe she had a thing against sad almost-orphans from trailer parks. Maybe one had pushed her down off her tricycle when she was a kid.
Buck’s fingers traced over my cheek and I blinked up at him, as his touch called me back into his focus.
“I’m fine with whatever,” I said and he sighed, pulling away. Behind him, Paige vanished from the door into the kitchen, done with throwing daggers at me for the moment.
“C’mon.” He tugged on my hand and I curled my fingers through his as he walked me down the porch and around the back of the house. There was a door there, recessed into the wall, with a keypad beside it. He punched in a code and the door’s lock clicked open. We went inside; it was a straight staircase up. He kicked off his shoes, and I mirrored his actions. The door shut behind me and clicked again, the lock sliding into place.
“What is this?” I asked, and though I should have been nervous, I wasn’t. He lead me up the stairs, smoothly textured wood that had pretty whorls and slubs in it under our feet. It was the fanciest wooden flooring I’d ever seen in my life.
“My apartment,” he said with a shrug as we came up onto the second floor. It was a studio, but bigger than I had ever seen on Pinterest or in design magazines. The room stretched from the back of the house to the front, and it was all open space littered with columns holding up the next ceiling. There was a modern-looking kitchen along one wall, a low king-sized bed by the eastern-facing windows, and a modular couch in the middle.
“I thought you said this was Gav’s party.” I was confused and he smiled at me, a sad sort of half-twist of his lips.
“It is. It’s my parents house, his party. He needed a place to have it cause last time his step-mom screwed one of the college kids that came, and his dad got pissed off and said no more parties at their place.”
That made sense. Well not really, but it was enough of an explanation to satisfy me for right then. I looked around, the open-plan bachelor suite was tricked out with every electronic ever, a giant flatscreen had a collection of video game consoles hooked up to it
